Scottish Widows opened for business as the Scottish Widows Fund Life Assurance Society in 1815 as was Scotlands first mutual life office. Originaly conceived in Edinburgh in 1812 to provide up 'a general fund for securing provisions to widows, sisters and other females' Scottish Widows is now recognised as one of the most recognised UK brands for life insurance.
In March 2000 Scottish Widows ceased to be a mutual (owned by it’s with profit policy holders) as it demutualised and became part of the Lloyds TSB Group.
Scottish Widows Investment Partnership manages around £97 billion ( 30/06/2006 ) of client funds and Scottish Widows employs just under 4,000 people.
The Scottish Widow
Scottish Widows is one of the most recognisable insurance brands in the UK . The Scottish Widow first appeared in a television commercial directed by David Bailey in 1986. There have now been three 'Widows' to date: Deborah Moore 1986–1994, Amanda Lamb 1994–2005 and Hayley Hunt 2005-present.
